Dear Professor, Jacobson

I am Mohamed Abouelker and I am a student at City College of New York. I would like to introduce myself to you as a freshmen student in your class who’s planning to be a mechanical engineer. I am an Egyptian student who traveled from his country to the US running after his goal. On August 24, 2016 everything changed, opening the window of the airplane and seeing the clouds covering the sky as my success is covering all my dreams. But of course, nobody can achieve any goals without being suffered or having challenges. One of the most challenging things that faced me here is that I am away from my mother and my sister. Being away from your family could put you under more pressure but my father who supported me a lot was able to help me out since I live with him. My experience with mechanics started a long time ago when my grandfather had a turning shop that creates tapes and water pumps that helps the water to reach the entire city. Watching my grandfather and his business growing up gives me the motivation to develop what he started. I started to work with him and day after a day I was able to know more about his job but when he passed away and my uncles took over him I started to give up and lose one of my dreams. My life experience is kind of different from anyone else. Me and my family were in a middle class in Egypt then by the time we became more advanced than before, when I came here I realized how people can build themselves from the bottom to the top and that was and still my goal. Working hard and keeping grinding is the only way to reach the top and you can not reach the top without education and life experience. I looked for a part-time job when I was 17 that could feed what I need then it started to be full-time in summer. In my senior year when the register for colleges started, I kept looking so carefully about the engineering field and Could not find anything better than CCNY in engineering. Thank GOD I got accepted to the college as an undecided student who needs to work hard to apply for a grove school in engineering. One of my long term goals is to go back to my country and give the engineers all the knowledge that I accepted. Many of them are having the dream to continue their education in a better place with a better environment but they can not afford the travel and learning expenses.

Yours sincerely,

Mohamed Abouelker
